Area Coordinator

天涯海角APP University has an immediate opening for an Area Coordinator.  This is an 11-month, full-time, live-in professional position responsible for managing on-campus residential facilities, residential life projects, and staffing.  In addition, this position provides targeted academic coaching, transition support, and student success programming, with particular emphasis on student-athletes and other students identified as needing additional support.  The Area Coordinator is an integral member of the Student Experience Division and collaborates across Student Life, Academic Services, and Athletics to support student success, persistence, and belonging.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage a residential area of 100-200 residential students, including all of the responsibilities required therein.
  • Communicate behavioral expectations and facilitate conflict resolution, roommate mediation, and respond to certain crisis situations.
  • Establish a professional presence and facilitate positive community development in residential areas, know area residents and their issues/needs, and maintain availability in the residence halls and in the main Student Life Office.
  • Coordinate delivery of developmental, educational, and social programming in residential areas.
  • Supervise Resident Assistants in a manner that fosters development and responsibility.
  • Serve on Student Life professional staff all campus on-call duty rotation and summer conference coordination team as necessary and respond to certain situations in person.
  • Facilitate customer service delivery in Student Experience programs while balancing student wants and developmental needs.
  • Provide individualized academic coaching and student success support for male student-athletes and other students identified through institutional referral processes, including assistance with time management, organization, study strategies, accountability, and connection to campus resources.
  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs, Athletics, and other campus partners to identify students who may benefit from additional support and to coordinate appropriate academic and developmental interventions.
  • Team teach or otherwise provide instructional support for designated student success courses, including Keys to Academic Success, with particular attention to students who may be less academically prepared for the transition to college.
  • Develop and deliver group-based academic success programming for student-athletes and other targeted student populations, including workshops and programs focused on preparation for exams, effective study practices, academic routines, and end-of-semester success.
  • Provide developmental support and mentoring to student-athletes as they navigate common transition and persistence challenges, including homesickness, team-role or playing-time frustrations, interpersonal concerns, and adjustment to college expectations; make referrals to appropriate professional resources when needs extend beyond the scope of the position.
  • Build intentional relationships with student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and staff to strengthen student engagement, belonging, accountability, and persistence while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Represent the Student Experience Division on various committees, as assigned. 
  • Ability to perform evening and weekend work, and ability to meet regular and predictable attendance standards.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor鈥檚 degree. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collegial manner with co-workers and other constituencies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated history of performing high-quality work with attention to detail.
  • Ability to use general office equipment, programs, and software including office computer, Microsoft Office 365, copier, telephone, facsimile machine, etc. 
  • Ability to multi-task and engage in the gathering, examination, and basic analysis of information to determine solutions or recommendations and/or take appropriate action required.
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective mentoring and coaching relationships with college students, particularly students who may benefit from additional academic or transition support.
  • Knowledge of student success strategies, academic coaching practices, and appropriate referral to academic, counseling, wellness, and other campus resources.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, coaches, academic support professionals, and Student Affairs colleagues while maintaining appropriate confidentiality and professional boundaries.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Master鈥檚 degree in Higher Education or related field.
  • Understanding of a small, liberal arts, residential campus.
  • Experience supporting student-athletes or working in a collegiate athletics environment.
  • Experience with academic coaching, student success instruction, mentoring, or retention-focused programming.
