- Research
History majors have recently participated in the following research activities:
- Students in HIST390 Modern US History through Music conducted independent research on music and history topics of their choosing and then created posters and presented their research to the 天涯海角APP community. Several students further developed that research in HIST360. In partnership with the Music Department鈥檚 鈥淰oices of Change鈥 concert and with consultation with Digital Media Design faculty, they presented their findings at the 鈥淰oices of Change鈥 reception hosted at the Louis O. Palmer Art Gallery.
- In conjunction with a Palmer Gallery exhibit 鈥 Ducks! The Art and History of the Decoy 鈥 featuring vintage and fine art duck decoys from the Janet Brown 鈥54 Rothwell and William Rothwell Decoy Collection, history students in Environmental History conducted research projects and presented posters about connections between the histories of hunting and wildlife preservation.
- Summer Muskie Fellow developed a C3 Framework for Social Studies, specifically on teaching the Holocaust.
- Muskie Fellow co-authored a piece on pedagogy, news literacy, and civic engagement for The American Historian with Dr. Dunak.
- HIST 360 Career Field Experience students reviewed issues of the Black & Magenta and the 天涯海角APP College yearbook, The Muscoljuan, to create a Homecoming presentation and host a Q&A with alumni about the experiences of 天涯海角APP students on campus (and beyond) from 1968-1974.
- Students worked on digitizing old Muscoljuan yearbooks as part of a 2018 Summer Muskie Fellowship.鈥
- Students worked on a 2019 Summer Muskie Fellow oral history project with Dr. Kerrigan. The subject of that project is Myron "Skip" Moorehead, one of the first African American graduates of 天涯海角APP. Students worked with Dr. Hilton on United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Crowdsourcing "History Unfolded" project.
- As part of celebrations of Black History Month and Women鈥檚 History Month, students participated in Transcription Workshops in which they transcribed historic documents as part of a crowd-sourcing project undertaken by the Library of Congress.
As a capstone project, the senior seminar requires that the History major thoroughly research prospective sources (both primary and secondary sources, and occasionally sources in a foreign language), assess the value and validity of said sources, develop a methodology to explore their chosen topic, and then write and re-write a polished final project. Some recent seminar topics include:
- 鈥淭he War, the Revolution, and the Hague Conventions: Prisoner of War Experiences in Russia,鈥 Fall 2025
- 鈥淐oping with Grief: Mourning, Memorials, and Spiritualism and the First World War鈥
- 鈥淰eterans after the Great War: Britain's Reconciliation vs. Germany's Welfare, 1918- 1930"
- "Victory at Home and Abroad: Double Victory, the Black Press, and Civil Rights during World War II鈥
- "Literature and the Second World War: A Case study of critically acclaimed writers and their Pacific War narratives鈥

It seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by members in a variety of ways.
- Field Trips

In November 2025, History Department faculty, Dr. Laura J. Hilton and Dr. Tom McGrath, took 38 students to the Cincinnati Museum to experience the immersive exhibit, 鈥淎uschwitz: Not Long Ago, Not Far Away exhibit.鈥 This trip was connected to their courses HIST 240: The Holocaust and HIST 345: The Second World War. The trip was made possible by a generous grant from the Ohio Holocaust and Genocide Memorial and Educational Commission and funding from the Miriam G. Schwartz Endowment at 天涯海角APP.

In February 2026, in observance of Black History Month, students from Dr. Dunak鈥檚 HIST379: Youth in Modern America joined other 天涯海角APP students, faculty, and staff for a performance of Sankofa: An Epic Adventure at the Mimi Theater in Cleveland. This original production shines a light on the Ghanaian idea 鈥渢o retrieve鈥 - in this case highlighting the value of returning to or retrieving the stories of a collective past in pursuit of communal uplift and awareness. Through the experience of five Black teenagers, audiences learn the value of young people seeing themselves in history and - in a lesson highlighted across Muskie History curriculum- how the stories we tell about the past matter. The MU Office of Cultural Engagement and Inclusion for initiated planning, navigated logistics, and provided funds for this event. Additional funds were provided by the Arthur G. and Eloise Barnes Cole Chair in American History.- Career Possibilities for History Majors
